Anza Borrego through New Eyes

Though I have been going to Anza Borrego Desert State Park for over 20 years, the time I spent there with David and Jennifer helped me slow down and see Borrego in a new and deeper way. Their expert knowledge of light , setting and moment allowed me to capture meaningful and personal images that reflect the beauty of what at first glance appears a harsh and unforgiving environment.
Image review and processing sessions lead by David and Jennifer provided not only the tools but also insight on how to truly make our images our own.
If you can go on only one Workshop - go with David and Jennifer and you won't be disappointed.

ONE OF A KIND EXPERIENCE (IN THE BEST WAY POSSIBLE ;)) OFF ROAD IN DEATH VALLEY

Full disclosure, I am a repeat client having done past workshops with David and Jennifer. There is a very good reason for that; they are simply the BEST. Everything is done with intention and consideration. Consideration concerning their clients, consideration concerning locations , and consideration concerning locations vis a vis real time weather conditions. No flying by the seat of one's pants. The locations have been scouted in advance, so when weather conditions rapidly change, they know which location would be best for that day's weather. This workshop was unique because we went to locations that are not often visited by workshops. They were harder to get to, and in two cases for sure, required a Jeep for safe travel. We went everywhere in a Jeep. Sure a few spots might have been accessible by rental car, but why risk getting stuck and ruining the workshop for all. Their teaching style is kind and helpful. It is never about what they insist you should photograph, but rather helping you to better accomplish what you envision. Ask yourself if you just want to take images that everyone else takes, or if you would rather be in a space where you can be yourself and take the images that speak to you. If it's that later, then David and Jennifer will exceed your expectations. The first workshop I took with them, I barely knew how to operate my camera, and yet I left with a feeling that I could get better and really enjoy this hobby. It doesn't matter what level photographer you are, you can be you and always be supported.

Workshop Attendee

Both Jennifer and David are excellent photographers and teachers including post processing. In addition, their in-depth knowledge of the locations Makes for a well rounded workshop. They are the best!

Great quality t-shirt!

Best workshop I’ve ever attended.

David and Jennifer were a great team and did a superb job in organizing daily trips, lectures, and portfolio reviews. All outings were of high quality and easy to get to. This workshop rekindled my love and excitement for photography. The workshop participants were all at a high level in both knowledge and artistry. Both instructors were very helpful for technical problems in the field with David using Canon and Jennifer using Nikon. We all enjoyed the camaraderie over the workshop and I liked it so much I signed up for the Yellowstone workshop later this year. I also received a book of a selection of photos taken by the participants which was a reminder of how well everyone did over the week. In summary, this is a low key, non competitive and warm workshop that will go a surprisingly long way in improving your technical and conceptual expertise in photography.

Rethink Lightroom Presets

This collection of presets for Lightroom from David Kingham is extensive. They thoroughly cover just about anything that a photographer could think of trying to do in post processing using Lightroom. There are major benefits both for someone who wants "push button" processing and for those who will spend time exploring why David has chosen the included methods. For advanced photographers, the why will change how you approach processing.

Best tools to make post processing easy and fast

These presets have been a game changer for me. They made the whole process of working on a picture so much easier and clearer. Instead of starting to play around with the different options and trying to figure out what I can do, these tools show me the different options, and then I can choose which ones work for me. The starting point presets are wonderful in helping me figure out the best tones to start with. So, instead of playing with the tone curve for quite some time till I get something I like, I can, with one press, see what the different options provide, and this makes this step so quick and easy. Then, the tools that allow me to look only at the shapes or the colors are a huge help to see how my composition works and what I need to tweak. Instead of imagining the shapes, I can just see them and make choices. In the tonal adjustment presets, I truly appreciate the ability to dodge and burn only highlights, as it makes the whole process really easy. The color adjustment presets again give you so many options for what you want to change and what you want to do. The ability to play around with the different options and see what works is a real-time saver. These presets also have different special tools - like sculpting clouds, reducing highlights in the sky, and so much more. Now, it takes me 15 minutes to edit a picture compared to more than 45 minutes, and the result is so much better. I couldn't ask for a better set of tools to make editing quick and fun.

Exploring Exposure Workshops - Best of the Best

I have attended many workshops with David and Jennifer, as well as workshops lead by other photographers. In my experience, David and Jennifer are truly the best in the business. Their attention to detail in the planning, execution, and follow up creates a valuable learning environment for all levels of photographers. The recent winter workshop to Yellowstone National Park was not only the best photography workshop I have participated in, but it was also the best travel experience of my life. I look forward to attending many more workshops with Exploring Exposure.

Exploring Exposure Winter Photography Workshop - Yellowstone National Park

If you're a photographer looking for a truly immersive and comprehensive experience, the Exploring Exposure Winter Photography Workshop in Yellowstone National Park is an absolute must. Led by the talented and experienced duo, David and Jennifer, this workshop goes beyond your typical photography class—it's an adventure into the heart of one of America's most iconic landscapes, made even more magical by the winter season.

From the very beginning, David and Jennifer showed incredible attention to detail in planning every aspect of the workshop, especially the logistics of staying deep in the park during the coldest months. They expertly navigated the challenges of below-freezing temperatures and remote locations, ensuring that the group had a seamless experience. The yurts where we stayed were surprisingly cozy, offering a comfortable refuge from the elements, and the food was excellent—hearty and warm, exactly what you need after a full day of shooting in frigid conditions.

The camaraderie among the group—guides and participants alike—was one of the standout aspects of this workshop. There’s something special about bonding over shared experiences in such a beautiful and challenging environment, and David and Jennifer fostered an atmosphere of genuine connection and support. We were all there to learn, but also to enjoy the adventure together, which made the trip even more memorable.

As for the photography, David and Jennifer truly excelled at finding the perfect shooting locations, even in the depths of winter when conditions can be unpredictable. Their intimate knowledge of Yellowstone allowed them to guide us to some stunning, lesser-known spots that I never would’ve discovered on my own. And their guidance in terms of winter landscape photography techniques was invaluable—everything from managing exposure in low light to capturing the unique textures of snow and ice, to making the most of the dramatic skies and steaming geysers. They provided expert insight at every step, whether it was a technical tip or helping us compose the perfect shot.

The level of personal attention and hands-on instruction made this workshop feel uniquely tailored to each participant. No matter your skill level, David and Jennifer made sure everyone walked away with new skills, improved confidence, and a gallery of incredible images.

If you’re looking for a winter photography workshop that goes beyond the basics and offers both technical expertise and a true wilderness adventure, there’s no better choice than the Exploring Exposure workshop. This workshop was a comprehensive, immersive, and a lot of fun. It’s an experience that will not only improve your photography but also give you lasting memories of Yellowstone at its most breathtaking.

A much needed Lightroom editing plugin

At first glance, Rethink Presets seemed a bit overwhelming. After spending some time getting acquainted on how this program works, I dove in and gave it a try.
The presets (more a great set of tools, not merely presets) are grouped in comprehensive, intuitive and easy to use sections, in the order that makes the most sense for processing images. Most other presets offer few, if any, individual preset adjustments. This is where Rethink is different: most Rethink presets offer almost limitless ways in which to fine-tune each step of the way, giving one unprecedented control while working in the Lightroom module. I truly only have scratched the surface of this fantastic program, but I already know it will be a big part of my photo editing workflow. Rethink will bring photo editing to a whole new dimension. One important note: I truly believe that Rethink should be looked at as a great toolbox, rather than just another preset program. Once you try it out, that will make a lot more sense. Kudos to David and Jennifer for developing this much needed program that will enhance your Lightroom workflow to exciting new levels!

Chicken Soup for the Creative Soul

No one knows Death Valley and all it has to offer – from grand scenes to intricate details – better than David Kingham and Jennifer Renwick. Their passion for the landscape is palpable and they really impressed upon me the value of discovering your own unique artistic vision and finding beauty in the quieter, smaller scenes of nature. David and Jennifer delivered a top-notch workshop that was deeply thought out and well-organized, complete with a pre-workshop zoom meeting to meet the group and cover the itinerary and packing list. They included a variety of field locations as well as classroom time to share images and review processing techniques. Their down-to-earth friendly approach attracts like-minded participants that made for a fun week. It was a special experience - like chicken soup for the creative soul - and I can’t wait to join them again in the future.

Death Valley BW

I had the privilege of attending the recent Death Valley Black and White workshop. As it turns out this was one of the best workshops I have ever attended. Both David and Jennifer were professional, experienced and knowledgeable. Both proved to be excellent guides and instructors. They were very attentive when needed. As a result I gained all of knowledge both in photography and post processing. I would highly recommend them. I will certainly be looking at another workshop in the future

Hi Joel, Thank you so much for your incredibly kind words about our Death Valley Black and White workshop. We're absolutely thrilled to hear you had such a positive experience and that you found it to be one of the best workshops you've attended!

We really appreciate you highlighting our professionalism, experience, and knowledge. It means the world to us that you felt we were attentive and that you gained valuable knowledge in both photography and post-processing.

We had a blast working with you too, and we're so excited at the prospect of having you join us on another workshop in the future!

Death Valley Black and White Workshop

This truly was a unique workshop. Generally instructors do not take the extra time to talk about post processing after creating images on location and death Valley. David and Jennifer were excellent teachers. They were very patient and answered every question as though it was the first time ever being asked. On-site on the dunes, David and Jennifer always visited each photographer during the shoot to ask about questions or suggestions or recommendations for composition. Again, they were very patient and helped with the creative process. David and Jennifer never ignored participants for the sake of taking their own images.

Hey John,

Thanks so much for the glowing review of our Death Valley Black and White Workshop. We're thrilled you found it to be a unique and valuable experience.

We loved having you with us and are so glad you appreciated our approach to teaching, both in the field and during post-processing. It means the world to us that you felt we were patient and helpful, that's exactly what we strive for! We truly enjoy sharing our passion with others and seeing your creativity blossom.

We had a blast exploring Death Valley with you and hope to see you on another workshop soon!

David and Jennifer

Death Valley from those who really know it

David and Jennifer really know the Death Valley location for photographers. What’s more is that they scout the locations in detail immediately before the workshop. In an area where weather dramatically alters the immediate landscape, this is vitally important when you are spending your precious time there.

Unlike many workshops, the instruction gets high priority, with classroom sessions where you learn steps towards that extra special image. In the case of the black and white workshop that I took, it involved David’s workflow that was simple, innovative and gave impressive results. Also field use of your camera divulges features that you never knew your camera had.

Hi Stewart,

Thank you so much for your fantastic review of our Death Valley Black and White Workshop! We truly appreciate your kind words and are so glad you enjoyed the experience.

It means a lot to us that you highlighted our location scouting and the priority we place on instruction. We're passionate about Death Valley and helping photographers capture its unique beauty, and your feedback really validates our approach. We were thrilled to share David's workflow with you and help you discover new features on your camera!

We had a blast working with you and would love to have you join us on another workshop soon.

Thanks again,
David and Jennifer

NiSi JetMag Pro Landscape ND Kit 82MAG Magnetic Filter Kit

NiSi JetMag Pro Landscape Filter Kit - First Impressions

I recently received the new NiSi JetMag Pro Landscape Magnetic Filter Kit after having ordered it from Exploring Exposure. The kit contained a nice hard shell carrying case, 3 ND filters, (3,6 and 10-stop) a CPL, a rear cap and 2 front caps as well as all the step-up rings I needed to be able to use the filters on all of my lenses. Having been using screw-in filters, I was really impressed with the quickness and ease of using the NiSi magnetic filters. I particularly like the 'bayonet' locking mechanism that secures the filters to the lens so they cannot fall off nor be knocked off by accident. The 'handles' or tabs on the side of the filters make them easy to handle, place and remove as well as rotate the CPL. A quick check of the filters showed no color cast nor vignetting even when I stacked the CPL and two additional ND filters on a 24mm lens.
Being new to a magnetic filter system it took me a little time to get used to the strength of the magnetics, but quickly learned how to effectively and efficiently handle them.

Death Valley Workshop

I applied to this workshop almost a year ahead and it was well worth the wait. The sand dunes photo op turned out to be my favorite location. Post-processing using Davids techniques was a new experience. When I returned home, I had tons of problems with the above. A week later I transferred files to a different computer then updated all programs. Now all is well and running. I can't wait to experiment with images. I appreciated the rotating individual help both David and Jennifer provided at all locations.

Hi Jeff,

Thank you so much for your kind words! We're thrilled to hear that you enjoyed the Death Valley workshop and found the sand dunes to be a highlight. It was our pleasure to provide you with individual support throughout the experience. We’re excited to see what amazing images you create with your new skills and can’t wait to work with you again in the future!

Death Valley Black and White Workshop

This was my first Workshop with David and Jennifer. My primary goal was to gain experience in processing images in B&W. I accomplished this and much more. David and Jennifer know Death Valley like their own backyard. The locations were superb. David and Jennifer were always available to assist while I struggled with camera settings and compositions. The classroom presentations and discussions were invaluable. I look forward to attending another workshop with them in the future.

Hi Richard,

Thank you so much for your fantastic review! We're thrilled to hear that you gained valuable experience in processing B&W images and that you enjoyed the locations we chose in Death Valley. It was a pleasure to assist you, and we're glad the classroom sessions resonated with you. We can't wait to work with you again in the future, there's always more to explore!

A fun loving and great learning experience!

This workshop was a thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding experience! David and Jennifer set the tone for a fun loving, growth experience. A milieu was established where photographers of all experience levels were welcome and provided with the appropriate level of input and feedback. I was gently pushed beyond my comfort zone which is a great place to learn! I highly recommend their workshops.

Best Investment Ever!

I highly recommend David’s mentoring! David assisted me by reviewing my images and providing constructive feedback on composition and post processing. This was augmented by improving my post processing skills. Surprisingly, I was able to simplify and reduce post processing time, while significantly improving my ability to realize my artistic vision.

In regards to artistic vision, I thought it would take years to identify my artistic style; however, with David’s help I was able to reach that goal in a few weeks. He accomplished this by having me share the photographers I admire and guiding me through a subset of their images asking me to share which ones resonated with me. He then helped me to identify the attributes of my preferred artistic style and the weather conditions that lend themselves to my artistic/photographic vision.

Wherever you are in your photographic journey, David can assist! The best photographic investment I have ever made by far!
